Being a 'Strong Black Woman' is crippling your career progress.
You are not alone in this journey Sis. We see, hear and understand what you are navigating. Be held for a change.
Burn Out
Facing microaggressions at work often forces you to self-shield and code-switch, which can lead to chronic burnout and make each day feel like a struggle. This constant pressure can make it hard to bring your full self to work, leaving you drained and considering whether it's worth staying.
Loneliness
Being one of the few—or only—Black women in the workplace can be deeply isolating, with over half feeling excluded and 53% not trusting their leaders to stand up for what's right. This lack of support and representation stalls career progress and impacts mental health, leading over 50% of Black women in senior roles to resign due to racism.
Feeling Unsafe
The workplace can feel like a mental minefield, especially if you have a marginalized identity. Experiencing microaggressions, scapegoating, and tone policing can make you feel psychologically unsafe, afraid to voice concerns or take risks without being boxed into a Black stereotype. This constant pressure can leave you feeling drained and unsupported.
Strong At All Costs
You may feel the pressure to stay strong, even under extreme stress, because showing emotion can be seen as a weakness. Hall et al. (2021) found that many Black women, like you, are expected to carry this burden silently. This constant need to appear unbreakable can lead to significant emotional strain, burnout and high levels of anxiety.
